A very common computer acronym is DNS, but do you know what it is? DNS means Doman Name system. It is not as complicated as it sounds. It is a name for the link between the URL you put into your computer and the machine that stores your files.
All of today’s computers use the binary code 0 or 1. Although our computers use them no one would want to write in o and 1, it would simply take too much effort. Since no one wants to read this our computer does the work for us and converts the 0 and 1’s to digital text we can actually read. This conversion makes our life a lot easier and the same process happens with computer-to computer connection.
DNS associates readable text with the number based IP address. Every website is made on a computer and is therefore associated with an IP address. The IP address can be very long and no one wants to memorize a lot of numbers just to get a to a website. So the DNS merges the IP address and the website site name to come up with a URL, so a site where you go to find a Zulily coupon code would come up like Zulilycouponcode.com instead of a bunch of numbers that don’t make any sense.
The name servers work similarly to a telephone book list and that is a good way to think of it. The name server merges the address and the destination. When a website moves it only takes about 24 hours to update the internet on the new location of the site. It does not take as much time to notify the internet as it would to get a new phone book.
